Sans-serif fonts are the typefaces that have no serifs, in other words, it doesn’t have any of the little hooks on the end of the letters. Here are a few good rules when choosing fonts for your website.

• Use one font for body text and one for a heading. Try not to use any more
• Don’t change the font in the middle of a sentence unless you can justify the choice
• Use a sans serif font for your body text

Web pages are intended to be viewed in a web browser (and more recently tablets and smart phones) and despite increases in resolution, it will never be as high resolution as paper. This means that a large amount of small serif font causes the serifs to blur together making them difficult to read.
A few examples of easily available (and web safe) sans serif fonts include:

• Arial
• Geneva
• Helvetica
• Lucida Sans
• Trebuchet
• Verdana

Use Serif Fonts for Print

Whilst is is difficult to read a serif font online, they are excellent for printed documents so if you have a print friendly version of your website you may wish to use a serif font. In print, the serifs actually make it easier to read and they allow people to tell the letters apart more easily and because print is higher resolution, the don’t seem to blur together like that can on a monitor

Always use serif fonts for your print-friendly pages.

Some examples of serif fonts are:

• Garamond
• Georgia
• New York
• Times
• Times New Roman

Of course, you shouldn’t be encouraging your visitors to print your website but if you do, you may wish to use an environmentally friendly font. Think about it carefully, using arial black will use more ink and paper than using arial narrow and now font designers have gone a step further.

Environmental Fonts

An excellent example is Ecofont which is available for download for free and places lots of tiny holes within the typeface, this produces readable text that uses less ink than a normal font. Therefore we would never suggest you use this typeface for external use because the results can be a little fuzzy. However for printing internally or printing personal documents in a 9-12 point type, it’s a good option that could save up to 20% on printer ink.

Another good example is the Evergreen typeface by GreenPrint. Evergreen focuses on saving paper and using less ink by using slimmer characters and reducing the space between them. They claim that using the typeface over Arial or Times, you can reduce paper usage by nearly 20%.

Of course, I can’t recommend that you press the print button unless you really have to after all, printing costs money and resources. A document management system eliminates the need for lots of printing and copying within your company as well as cutting manual data entry by up to 90% but if you do choose to print, please consider which font you use for more than just it’s looks.

1. Elevation Church

The first thing you will notice when you got o this site is that clock that shows when the next service is being help. But what really struck me was the fact that this website actually has an online campus where you can go through their sermons, bible studies and more. All of this is with a fairly trendy design that gives you a slide show and a simple grid system, as well as communication links to their Facebook, Twitter, RSS feed and email form. They have also started allowing for online donations as tithing, which is becoming pretty popular with churches these days.

2. Long Hollow Church

Long Hollow has a great design that was obviously created by a designer who knew their stuff. There is a small slideshow on the front page, along with attractive thumbnails They have top tabs and a side bar with icons and an extended version of what is going on at the bottom. All of this is with a brown and beige color scheme that works very well, especially thanks to the splashes of color offered in the grid.

3. Abundant Living

The interesting background images of faces is cheerful and well made, with a different kind of grid for all their information. They are regular updaters, with a live stream of all church services for people to enjoy. They also have all of their outreach programs and special activities right there on the front page, with different sections for youth group and nursery.

4. Calvary Chapel

Calvary Chapel in Florida has been utilizing technology for awhile. They broadcast the sermon every week from Pastor Bob to the other locations around the state, as well as to an “online campus” that people can stream or download from anywhere. Their site design even has a counter to the next live stream up at the top. The entire color scheme works well, and they offer a ton on the front page without being too crowded.

5. Church of the King

This is a much simpler design than the others, and is slightly out of date as far as the look goes. But they have some great access to links through the logos on the bottom, such as their LifeGroups and their 2 Word Story site, which allows you to tell about how God and ministry have changed your life. It is aimed at personal communication with both members and non-members, which is impressive and not often used.

6. Saint Gregory’s of Nyssa

This episcopal church has a great motif, with an old painting of Saint Gregory right on the front page. They list everything coming up in basic text on the sidebar for quick reference, which is a great user friendly feature for anyone who wants a quick look at the date or time of an event. They also use PayPal for donations, like many other sites.

7. Church On The Queensway

The design here has an emphasis on the slideshow on the front page. But the background is interesting, which a pattern that is shown in both light and shadow like wallpaper. It is a very nice effect that melds well with the easy design of the rest of the side. It all uses a grid, but not one you often see. They are also very friendly towards new users to help them see what to expect if they visit the church. They also have an arts section, which includes their own dancing school.

8. One Spokane

The entire top half of this site is dedicated to an interesting slideshow that contains coming events, regular features and more. But when you go down you will find a wider navigation dashboard to their site. They try not to put too much on the front page, with everything else accessed through small and discreet links on the top and bottom of the page.

9. Canyon Creek Church

If you are a fan of MMA, you might have heard of the Fight Pastor. This is his church, and you can find a link to his blog on the page. But otherwise, we are presented with an elegant design that shows off a slideshow and side tabs for n avigation, and a small number of links below. It is the little touches that are best here, including what looks like a scribbled circle when you hover over a link.

10. Your Trinity

The This Week at Trinity slideshow has some interesting events, all shown wit a bright picture and a small explanation. Other than the links provided in tabs, there is nothing else to distract you. It is clean, but without the sterile look of many others. It is obvious that everything was build around the slideshow, and in this case it worked.

Conclusion

Churches have really been trying to make an effort to keep up with technology, especially to keep costs down and so provide more money to their ministry outreach. Has your own church done the same? Show us their website in the comments.
